Four guests. That is the number that catches families out. Coast Guard recruit graduation at Training Center Cape May is capped at four guests per recruit because of space, and your recruit chooses who those four are during their last weeks of training. Book nothing until that invitation arrives.
Every other branch has a graduation guide written ten times over. The Coast Guard has almost none, which is odd, because it is the branch where the logistics matter most. There is exactly one recruit training centre for the whole service, it sits on a barrier island in New Jersey, and the ceremony runs to a schedule that does not bend for travel plans.
Here is what actually happens, taken from the Training Center’s own published guidance rather than from forum memory.
One boot camp, eight weeks, Cape May
Training Center Cape May is the Coast Guard’s only recruit training centre. Basic training runs eight weeks, with new classes starting most weeks, so graduations come round on a near weekly cycle rather than in seasonal batches.

Ceremonies are normally held on Fridays at 11:00 in the morning, though the Training Center is explicit that this can shift to suit its own needs and that graduations are sometimes moved to avoid federal holidays. Treat the day as firm and the hour as near certain, but do not build a tight connection around it.
The four guest cap, and why it decides everything else
Attendance is capped at four guests per recruit. Invitations go out from the recruit during their final few weeks. That ordering matters more than anything else in this piece: the recruit decides, and they decide late.

Families routinely book flights and rooms before that happens, then discover the list is full. Cape May in summer is a holiday town with holiday pricing and limited rooms, so the pressure to book early is real. Book refundable, or wait.
Getting on base
The main gate opens to graduation guests at 8:15 in the morning. Every guest has to present valid state or federal photo identification to get on, and every driver needs a valid licence. Names must match.

A few practical things from the Training Center’s guidance that people get wrong. Pets are not permitted on base at all, so do not plan around a dog in the car. Smoking is confined to designated areas at the Ida Lewis Auditorium and the Exchange. The speed limit is 20 miles per hour on base and 25 on the approach, seatbelts are required, and drivers cannot use a phone.
Indoors or outdoors, and why it changes what you wear
The venue moves with the season. From October until roughly the first of May, graduations are held indoors in the William R. Flores Gymnasium. From early May until roughly October they move outdoors to the Parade Field, and in bad weather an outdoor ceremony shifts back inside with the times unchanged.

That seasonal split is the single most useful thing to know for dressing. An October ceremony is a heated gymnasium. A July ceremony is a parade field in full sun with no shade and a long wait beforehand. Coast Guard personnel themselves switch uniform with the season, tropical blue for the outdoor months and service dress blue for the indoor ones, and the Training Center says service equivalent is expected from other branches.
There is no enforced dress code for guests. Most families land on smart casual, a step up from everyday, and the people who regret their choice are almost always the ones who wore new shoes or ignored the forecast.
The meals are the part people miss
There is a family dinner at the Harborview on base on Thursday evening, and a pre graduation family breakfast at the Harborview at 8:30 on the Friday morning, which costs ten dollars a head. Registration links come directly to families.
Both are worth doing. The Thursday dinner is where you meet the company commanders who have had your recruit for eight weeks, and the other families who have been through the same eight weeks of not hearing much. If you only have the energy for one, make it Thursday.
After the ceremony
Once the ceremony concludes, recruits are free to depart. Photography of your own graduate on base is encouraged. Travel arrangements to their first unit are handled for them, so the time you get is the time right after the parade, and it is shorter than families expect.
What families wear, and what it is for
Coast Guard families are the quietest of the service families, partly because there are fewer of them and partly because the branch spends its life being mistaken for the Navy. A graduation is one of the few days where that gets corrected in public.
If you want something to wear that says which branch without pretending to any rank or award, that is what our In My Coast Guard Mom Era designs are for. Lettering and a life ring, no service seal and no insignia anyone had to earn. The word on it is Always Ready, which is the plain English of Semper Paratus and the thing Coast Guard families actually say.
If you are wondering whether wearing branch clothing is appropriate when you did not serve yourself, the short answer is yes and the law is narrower than people think. We set it out in military family shirts, who can wear them. The whole range sits in Veterans and Military.
